Grogar is the lord of darkness and ruler of the ancient, hellish city known as Tambleon. Years ago, Grogar tried to take over this realm. He seemed unstoppable. Nothing even phased him, but his greatest strength was also his greatest weakness. While he draws his powers through the bell around his neck, in the heart of Tambleon, there is a similar bell of massive size. Once rung, Grogar and his kingdom will be banished for another century, once again awaiting a chance to seize yet another dimension in his icy grip. Tartarus is a lonely place...
Aware of far more than anypony knew, Grogar successfully used his underlings and traitors in order to set his plan in motion. King Sombra, having rejected his master's control, fled to the Crystal Empire. He thought his heart changed back to its former purity by a special somepony, but the paranoia Grogar had planted in his head drove him mad. While the ram's dark magic intended to absorb both the mother and unborn foal, Sombra (or Prince Topaz) was able to interfere and be sucked in as a replacement. This was not the ideal outcome, but still laid the foundation for the next step. Once Grogar and the lost kingdom of Tambelon had been raised from Tartarus, Prince Bray went into the castle in order to challenge Grogar as a gambit to buy time for others to ring the Silver Bell of Tambelon. They succeeded, but the results were not what the Prince had hoped. While shattering the smaller bell around the ram's neck and reducing him to a incorporeal form, Grogar used the pure life energy siphoned from Sombra during his act of selflessness in order to continue to exist for seconds longer without being returned to the dark pits from whence he came. That was all the time that he needed. Grogar merged his energy with the Silver Bell of Tambelon, his newly focused dark energy shaping itself into a near spitting image of his former self; The exception being his pitch black visage and now gargantuan size. More powerful than ever, Grogar of The Emptiness headed towards the cities and towns of Equestria, leaving the prince alive so that he could watch the evil he unwittingly unleashed set his world ablaze with the fires of Tartarus.
After a long and destructive battle, Grogar was returned to his former self, whom Prince Bray had just recently been made aware of. Shedding away the evil that had consumed him for so long, the prince and the old sage made amends, vowing to work together to make Equestria the ancient kingdom of Tambelon a better place. Grogar soon became aware that his past evil was not expunged from the world, but merely lying dormant. After attacking him, Grogar was forced to shed his mortal coil and resort to becoming an entity of consciousness in order to keep his dark side at bay in the pits of Tartarus.
